UNIVERSITÉ DE LA POLYNÉSIE FRANÇAISE

On the west coast of Tahiti, 8 kilometres south of the capital Papeete and 2.5 kilometres from the international airport, the Outumaoro campus of the University of French Polynesia is located in Punaauia, a town with a population of around 30,000.

It offers a superb view over the lagoon and the island of Moorea.
Every year, the university welcomes international students on exchange programmes or for individual mobility, and hosts research professors, administrative staff and foreign experts as part of specific programmes.

HISTORY

Created in 1999, the University of French Polynesia is a public scientific, cultural and professional institution. Since its creation, it has been a dynamic player essential to the development of higher education, training and research in French Polynesia. Since then, in order to improve the learning experience for students and research, the institution has constantly adapted. An additional 2,600 m2 were dedicated to teaching and research in 2009. Since September 2021, the ‘Archipels connectés’ scheme has enabled students from remote archipelagos to receive training. Finally, a 5,000 m2 research centre was built in 2023.

VALUES AND MISSIONS

Responsible towards society, the University of French Polynesia is committed to the evolution of society. It embraces strong values such as eco-responsibility, inclusion, particularly through the promotion of gender equality, excellence and the scientific, technological and cultural development of French Polynesia. These principles guide the University in its operations, its actions and its entire community. For example, this is reflected in the introduction of a spontaneous car-sharing system in the area of ecology, or, in the area of equality, in the organisation of an international week to fight for women’s rights in March 2022, or the organisation of a symposium on disability in May 2023.

PRESENTATION OF COURSES

Universities have a crucial role to play in shaping future generations. It is through a diversified, multidisciplinary range of courses that the school awards state or university diplomas that are transferable to many European countries through the LMD (Licence – master – doctorat) system, but that’s not all.

Indeed, its teaching is divided between the three training departments: DEG (Law, Economics and Management), LLSH (Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences) and STS (Science, Technology and Health). Secondly, the Institut National Supérieur du Professorat et de l’Education (INSPE) at the University of French Polynesia organises in-service training for primary and secondary school teachers and education staff. There are a total of 13 general bachelor’s degrees, 3 professional bachelor’s degrees, 7 master’s degrees and several continuing education courses.

RESEARCH

In terms of research, the University of French Polynesia (UPF) currently has the greatest potential for interdisciplinary research in French Polynesia. Its reputation extends beyond national borders, with strong partnerships at the overseas, regional and international levels.

UPF is a centre of excellence in the study and promotion of Polynesian heritage and Oceanic cultures and civilisations.

UPF contributes to the scientific, technological and cultural development of French Polynesia through its four laboratories, a joint research unit, a Maison des Sciences de l’Homme du Pacifique and partner research establishments.

In addition, with the Pacific doctoral school, the university trains and supports future researchers in French Polynesia. Around fifty doctoral students have been accepted and more than 8 theses have been defended on average each year since 2010.

CAMPUS LIFE AND INFRASTRUCTURE

The University of French Polynesia (UPF) is located in a particularly pleasant setting, conducive to the academic success and personal development of its students. The Outumaoro campus (Faa’a, Tahiti), where the university is located, is young, modern and has excellent facilities. The facilities cover a total area of 12 hectares and include areas dedicated to teaching, research and documentation (library and media library), accommodation, catering facilities (university restaurant and cafeteria) and sports facilities.
