COMPARISON WITH ANGLO-SAXON DIPLOMAS

Legally, there is no automatic equivalence between a foreign diploma and a French diploma. Applications are therefore handled on a case-by-case basis by the higher education establishment concerned.

The decision to grant equivalence is not based solely on the qualifications obtained in the country of origin, but also takes into account the content of the training followed, the number of years of study, and the institution where the studies were carried out.

Without establishing any rules, we can nevertheless draw parallels between the higher education curricula of different countries. For example: comparing the English and American systems with the French one.

Parallel: American/French educational curricula

American colleges and universities differ a lot from French institutions of higher learning. The parallel between the American and French systems is therefore much more difficult to establish than for the British system. Only a very general idea of equivalences can be given here. In fact, there is no official equivalence between French and American diplomas. The French university alone is in a position to decide the level to which the American student will be admitted. Its own admission requirements always come into play.

High school diploma

This level of study does not necessarily allow an American student to enter higher education in France. It is not the equivalent of the baccalauréat. Validation of the diploma therefore depends on the American establishment where it was prepared, as well as the number of hours of study and the type of teaching.

Bachelor’s degree

This American diploma is equivalent either to a French bac + 2 diploma (DEUG, DEUST, BTS, DUT), or to a Bachelor’s degree  (LMD system) and even to a Master (M1 level – LMD system). Here again, it all depends on the American university where the degree was earned.

Master’s degree

If the student has prepared a dissertation to earn a Master’s degree, French universities generally consider that he or she has completed a Master’s degree (M1 – LMD system) and can therefore enter the M2 level of the Master’s curriculum (LMD system). If not, the level is reduced to a Bachelor’s degree, and the student then prepares a Master’s degree (M1).

Doctorate (PhD)

The PhD level is similar in France and the USA.

TUITION FEES

In the absence of an inter-university partnership agreement, you will be required to pay UPF tuition fees for the academic year in which you wish to enroll.

For information, tuition fees for initial training are indicated in the “training” section.
